The Big Man From Deira

The Big Man From Deira

‘Welcome Sirrrr….’

That long drawl and warm tone were so reassuring. The city was Dubai and I was back after two and half years. After checking into my usual hotel in Deira I unpacked, showered and stepped out for dinner to my favourite restaurant next door.

He was right there, outside the doors, exactly as he had been there, before the pandemic. And, he was there, now. All four foot and maybe a few more inches of him.

Armed with a charming smile, he was ushering casual walkers, tourists and everyone else who passed his doors to the restaurant. Few could resist his charm.

There was another restaurant next door and it was obvious he was taking away some of their business. Nevertheless, they couldn’t resist smiling at his infectious energy and charm.

In his shalwar and red cap, he was a big man, dedicated to his job of feeding humans and keeping his employer happy. And, watching him from inside, tucking into warm rotis and kebabs, I told myself with a smile;

It’s OK, everything’s back to normal.
